THE FLAT PATCH
Branding, packaging and collateral design. This is a hypothetical student project
The Flat Patch aims to educate and promote environmental consciousness, in an achievable way for young people who are living in apartments, flats or share houses. The impact we have on the environment and the way we each do our part to reduce it is ever present. The Flat Patch is a way of tackling packaging, food and monetary waste associated with supermarket shopping, through teaching users how to establish a vegetable patch at home. Therefore, reducing the amount of money spent at the supermarket, the need to buy packaged produce and the amounts of leftover ingredients that become waste.
The logo is representative of the multiple stories that make up apartment living, through stacking the words upon one another. Whilst the flattened dash reflects the physical veggie patch growing from a balcony or backyard.
All materials within kit are carefully considered, falling into three categories, recyclable, re-purposeful or biodegradable. For the box, I chose Australian made premium dressed pine. The box is durable and can be repurposed for other storage solutions. The fertiliser, repellent and watering vessels are all made from amber glass to protect the contents of the bottles from light. These can be refilled, reused or re-purposed too. The Handmade paper implemented for the seedling cards is made from paper waste and is biodegradable. Similarly, the paper used for the publications and tags are all printed onto recycled paper. Lastly, the reusable linen bag containing soil can be used as a shopping bag for fresh produce or a dust bag.
